Root Down Radio is a free-to-consume online radio station. We are committed to playing and promoting high quality music across multiple genres, inspired by the DIY ethic of the reggae & hip hop pioneers.

The station has been built from the ground up, from the service itself built out of free open source software, to the brand & promotion side using social & crowdsourcing channels. The intention is to get it out there and let it grow, adding shows & new features as we go, taking feedback & continually improving the channel.

Radio Show Hosts & DJ’s

We provide a free independent music channel for DJs & artists to reach a bigger audience and promote good music in all our lives. If you know me, and are interested in hosting your own show on the channel, get at me (using the usual channels or the links below). Depending on your studio setup, I can set you up with a small free client software install and the connection details, so you can get a show & broadcast from your own location.

Pre-requisites: laptop / PC with soundcard, decent microphone & high quality digital files (if using Serato / Ableton / Virtual DJ etc) or vinyl with ability to route sound output to soundard. We only support 320Kpbs+ MP3 sources.

Web Developer Needed

We are actively searching for a web developer to lead the technical upgrades & feature improvements to the station. If you are a developer with an open mind, a strong work ethic & a love of music, get in touch. We can provide training and guidance, but experience in the following technologies is sought; AWS Cloud, Ubuntu / Linux OS, Icecast, LiquidSoap, Digital Audio Codecs, WordPress, source control, scripting / programming (PHP/Python/Java), CI/CD & DevOps methodologies.

Licensing, publishing & costs

We are committed to making sure artists are paid their due publishing for the music play. We therefore pay our PRS & PPL licensing subscriptions, and ask for a small yearly contribution from DJ’s & radio show hosts towards these costs.

The only other rule is “Be nice!” or we reserve the right to pull the plug
